My Open Flame is my own personal approach to recovery. It might not be an earth-shattering approach, but it looks at self-improvement from the perspective of mental health. My way takes a more comprehensive approach to recovery, and tries something new, for me at least. Because I believe there is something more. I believe it doesn’t have to be this way.
I know what I would tell someone in my situation. I know what I’ve been trained to say. But that’s not what I’m going to do. Because I have done it over and over again; and though I am pumped full of medications, have moved across country to be by the ocean (my happy place), have an incredibly supportive family, know my coping skills & triggers like the back of my hand, and am super educated about my diseases; I still have not gotten a foothold out of this hole, without falling right back down the next time another episode starts!
I think that there are a lot of people out there who are like me, that have mental illness(es) as well as dreams and goals and families and jobs and educations and hobbies and so much more; yet have found themselves in the endless loop of “existing” instead of “thriving,” and that’s just crap. Not everyone with mental illness needs to be coddled and treated as if they are not capable of living a fulfilling life, in fact most do not. Everyone deserves a chance at a well-rounded, meaningful existence. And hopefully, my blog will help show you how!
Instead of just looking at the classic “self care” category of recovery, I’m going to make a drastic assumption. I’m going to assume that we want more, that we deserve more, and that we can handle more. The self-care loop can be endless, if everything else constantly seems overwhelming because you’re not working on those areas too! Then nothing ever gets better. So rather than focusing on only one segment of your life at a time, I’m going to show you how to focus on living a complete and fulfilling life- little piece by little piece. The keys are organization, self-reflection, and listening to yourself throughout the process!
There will be setbacks along the way, of course. I do not claim to have the cure to mental illness, certainly not my own. You will still be sick. I will still be sick. We will still need help, and we will still get better and get worse. But what I am hoping to be able to do is:
*to make those times fewer and farther between
*to make those times more bareable
*to make the in-between times better
*to better predict when those times will happen

There are plenty of reasons you may be reading this. You could have a mental illness or think you may have one (In which case you should really call your local NAMI or Rescue Help Line, and they’ll help you through what to do next. National numbers are listed under Resources. You might have a family member with MI and want to know how to help, or you are one of an immeasurable amount of people who have a close friend with a mental illness and want to know more. Or maybe you are just an awesome person who wants to be a great member of society by knowing a little about a disease that will effect at least a quarter of you…or you could be my friend of family member supporting me- in which case, you fall into the “family member or friend category above.” (Hi Mom and Dad, Love You!)
